Music. The ever-changing art that has changed society forever. Composed of harmonies, melodies, and notes that make up a catchy song. For me, music has always been a huge part of my life. I don’t play or make music, I listen to it. I listen to the note changes, the dramatic build-ups and the flowy voices throughout I would say almost every song on the planet. While some people put a song on the radio and wait for it to end or for their favorite part to come on, I love waiting for every song. From listening to songs I have gained the ability to listen thoroughly to truly absorb the meaning behind lyrics and the music layered behind those words. I connect this ability to how I am as a student and as a friend.
First, as a student, I really listen to what my teachers and peers are saying. While most people block out some of what they say or all of it, I try my best to take in their helpful knowledge. Using what I’ve learned from them, I can apply the teachings to my life. Maybe it’s inspiring quotes or encouraging sayings that not only help me to get through but live with purpose. A quote that I heard from a teacher once, “You can’t judge the past through the prism of the present.” Kind of a tongue twister but there is such hidden value underneath. If we are constantly regretting what we’ve done or didn’t do, we will never move forward in life and reach the full potential that we truly are all destined for.
Next, as a friend, being there for people is my specialty. If you need me, call me, text me, or talk to me, I’m there for you. Doesn’t matter where I am, or who I’m with, I want to help. A lot of the time it's people just speaking and all I do is allow a place for them to just speak. But my job is to listen and to remember, to be mindful of the things they say for the future.
Then, as a human, social media, conversations, etc. I once heard this quote on TikTok. Its powerful message shook me to my core and reminded me of the importance of being uniquely you: “In a world where many wear a mask, it is a privilege to see a soul.” These words reminded me of the importance of being who you are, and that your personality is contagious and will attract the people that connect most to you. Listening to this gave me the confidence to face the challenges of being a teenager and to accept who I am as a person.
Lastly, I listen to myself. Personally, I can’t stress enough how important it is to listen to yourself. How you feel, what you want, your dreams, etc. Listening to yourself will help with self-discovery along with figuring out who you truly are in this very hectic world. I also remind myself how will I ever be able to listen to others, If I simply cannot listen to myself.
To conclude, I guess you can say that listening is seen as a blessing and a curse. You hear the things you want, but also the things you don’t. But that is a part of life, you’ll never hear good news without the bad. Listening has allowed me a way to connect with people and myself, and something I value as one of life's greatest treasures.
