Artist of the Edition (Fall '23): Annie Fang

Olyvia Bendza

Annie Fang is a Senior AP Art student from China, who became a Mountie just this year. She’s incredibly fashionable, has a bright personality, a great sense of humor, and makes some of the most delicious-looking dishes I’ve ever seen for her Instagram.

To begin the interview, I asked Annie to tell me about her earliest memories of art to get a further understanding of her art journey. Annie painted a picture of her earliest stages, describing the prestige and competitiveness of kindergarten class, and noting how the school was what introduced her to art.

“They have a lot of art supplies and let the children do what they want.”

However, it wasn’t all sunshine and rainbows as the competitive environment became stressful for Annie even at the age of four. This level of pressure didn’t wane over time, but rather it grew. While Annie endured a lot of stress during her time in school, she found comfort in anime. Annie is a big fan of the genre and takes a lot of inspiration from it in her art. The joy that anime brings is what guides her to continue creating her pieces.

The first assignment in AP Art was to create a montage out of four to six famous artworks. Annie’s result was nothing short of spectacular. By choosing a selection of abstract and modern art, she creates an incredibly eccentric and balanced piece that is incredibly entertaining to explore.

Like the genres, the media is also a balanced mix of Prismacolor pencils, and permanent markers in a variety of colors and sizes. This was the first time Annie had ever used Sharpies on her artwork and emphasized the frustration that occurred after realizing some of the colors weren’t as vibrant as their caps advertised. Although certain shades were not anticipated, it is clear that the colors still manage to pop off the paper and add an extra layer of depth to the piece.

All I can say is that I am incredibly in awe of Annie’s work, and cannot wait to see what she can accomplish this year. Amazing job!
