The Presidential Election: Who are the Candidates?

Aleena Lopez

It’s impossible to not hear about the upcoming presidential election. Whether it’s on social media or the news, we all know it’s coming up this November. But what do we know about these candidates? Here’s some basic information on our two presidential nominees:

Kamala Harris: The Democratic nominee. Born on October 20, 1964, in California, Harris attended Westmont High School and graduated in 1981. From there, she attended Howard University and then went to UC Law in San Francisco. By then it was 1989, and Kamala was working in the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office as a prosecutor. In 2004, Kamala was elected to be San Francisco’s District Attorney. She served as the D.A. for two terms (2004-2010) and was the first female, African-American, and South Asian American to hold this position. Once her second term as D.A. was over, Harris took over the position of Californian Attorney General, once again being the first female, African-American, and South Asian American to hold this position. She served from 2010-2017, resigning so that she could join the U.S. Senate (a job she had been elected for in 2016). She served in the Senate for three years, and in 2019, she joined President Biden as his vice president nominee. When they won the election in 2020, Harris became the first African-American and South Asian woman to hold the office of Vice President of the United States of America. Harris is coming towards the end of her term as Vice President, and - as we know - she is now running to be the first female President of the United States of America with her Vice Presidential nominee, Tim Walz.

Donald Trump: The Republican nominee. Born on June 14, 1946, in New York, Trump attended the New York Military Academy until 1964. From there, he went to Fordham University for two years and then the Wharton School of Finance and Commerce for another two years. The former President’s father, Fred Trump, was a successful real estate and construction owner, and once Donald finished school, he joined his father’s company. In 1974, Trump became the president of many corporations that he owned, and he named this group the Trump Organization. A few years into this position, Trump began to focus on luxury properties in busy cities such as New York and Atlantic City, greatly expanding the company. In 1983, the Trump Tower was opened, and in the years that followed, more Trump properties were purchased. In 1999, Fred Trump passed away, and the former President became the company’s CEO. His fortunes went up and down over the years due to the economy’s instability, but Trump still retained his fortune. In June 2015, the former President formally announced that he would be running for President. In past years, he tested this theory, talking about the country’s need for a strong candidate and having a strong interest in politics, but nothing official was made until 2015. As we know, Trump won the election in 2016, serving his term until he lost his second run for President in 2020. Now, the former President is making his third run for Presidency with his Vice President nominee, JD Vance.

While I may have written a lot of information for each candidate, I only scratched the surface of their accomplishments and their personalities. The point of this article is to inform young American citizens about current events, because we are the country’s future, and I believe that as future world leaders, we should know about who is leading us now.
